Cook County Keeps Oak Lawn Death Records

Oak Lawn does not run a local office for death records. All death certificates for Oak Lawn are filed with the Cook County Clerk's Bureau of Vital Statistics. When a death happens here, the funeral home or hospital files the certificate with Cook County. From that point, it becomes part of the county death index and stays in the clerk's permanent records.

The Markham Courthouse is the best branch for Oak Lawn residents. It sits at 16501 Kedzie Avenue, Markham, IL 60426. Phone 708-232-4150 to reach them. Markham is only a short drive south of Oak Lawn on Kedzie, and this branch handles the same death index requests as the main downtown office. Walk in during business hours with your ID and the details you need, and staff can search the system for you. Same-day copies are common for recent deaths. Older records from far back in the index may take a bit more time.

Oak Lawn Death Index Access Rules

Illinois law restricts who can get a death certificate. Under 410 ILCS 535, death records are not public. You must be a relative of the deceased person or prove a legal or financial interest. Relatives who qualify are the spouse, parent, child, or sibling. If you do not fall into one of those groups, you will need to bring proof of your reason for requesting the record. Estate settlement work, insurance claims, and property transfers are the most common qualifying reasons.

Bring a valid photo ID to the office. The clerk accepts an Illinois driver's license, state ID, U.S. passport, or military ID. It has to be current and readable. An expired or damaged ID will stop your request cold. For non-relatives who need an Oak Lawn death record, a letter from the requesting agency or company explaining the reason is also needed.

Fees for Oak Lawn Death Certificates

Cook County sets all the fees for death certificate copies. The first certified copy costs $17. Additional copies of the same record cost $6 each when you order them at the same time. A $2 surcharge per certified copy goes to the Death Certificate Surcharge Fund as required by 410 ILCS 535, Section 25. That surcharge is already included in the $17 price.

Genealogical copies are available for deaths that occurred 20 or more years ago. These uncertified copies cost less than standard certified ones and are stamped for genealogy use only. They work for family history research but have no legal weight. The Cook County Genealogy Unit handles these requests for older Oak Lawn death records. If you are doing family tree work, this is often the better and cheaper option.

Cash, check, and money order are accepted at all offices. Some branches take credit cards. For mail orders, send a check or money order payable to the Cook County Clerk.
